  33. I. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION.
  34.  
  35. ImgViewer/16 is a Windows program for viewing and printing 
  36. digital images in a variety of standard formats.  Image formats 
  37. supported include GIF, .BMP, PCX, TGA, TIF, and .JPG. GIF and 
  38. PCX provide compression of 256-color images, while .JPG 
  39. provides compression for 16-million color images, thus saving 
  40. disk space.
  41.  
  42. ImgViewer/16 has editing features and file conversion routines built 
  43. in, which allow you to change images to suit your needs.  You can 
  44. crop, resize, stretch, rotate, mirror, flip, sharpen, soften, extract 
  45. edges, negate and adjust brightness, contrast and gamma.
  46.  
  47. A quick Zoom Tool provides instant magnification of areas of an 
  48. image, for close inspection.
  49.  
  50. Full documentation is included in the form of a Windows Help file.  
  51. When you desire help, press your F1 function key for context-sensitive 
  52. help, or press the help button if you are in a dialog box.
  53.  
  54. ImgViewer/16 is time-limited shareware.  It is fully functional 
  55. and provides all features that are included in the registered 
  56. version, but it will stop functioning after 60 days if a 
  57. copy has not been purchased.  
  58.  
  59. ImgViewer/16 contains functions which can read and write the .GIF format, 
  60. which contains compression technology covered by U.S. Patent No. 
  61. 4,558,302, owned by the Unisys corporation.  The author of ImgViewer/16 has 
  62. obtained a license from Unisys, and pays a royalty on each 
  63. sale, to use this technology. The following statement is 
  64. required by that license:
  65.  
  66.     "Use of this software is permitted only to the extent
  67.     reasonably required to determine whether to purchase
  68.     the software.
  69.  
  70.     "After payment is made, use of this software is limited
  71.     to use on only a single personal computer or
  72.     workstation which is not used as a server.  An
  73.     additional payment is required for each use on
  74.     another personal computer or workstation.
  75.  
  76.     "Only a single copy may be made of this software
  77.     solely for backup or archival purposes.  The software
  78.     may also be transferred to a single hard disk.
  79.  
  80.     "Any use of this software in violation of the above is
  81.     not licensed.

  92. II. Program requirements.
  93.  
  94. ImgViewer/16 requires an IBM compatible 386 or better, running 
  95. Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, or Windows NT, with at least 8 megs of RAM 
  96. and VGA or better graphics.  Recommended: 486DX or better with an 
  97. accelerated graphics adapter.
  98.  
  99. Most operations require a mouse.
  100.  
  101. Graphics files can be quite large, particularly with true-color, so a 
  102. large hard disk is recommended.  ImgViewer/16 will require under 1 
  103. meg for program installation.
  104.  
  105. III. Installing ImgViewer/16
  106.  
  107. If you obtained ImgViewer/16 by downloading it from a computer 
  108. Bulletin Board (BBS) or another online source, one necessary 
  109. file may not have been included.  You will need a file called 
  110. VBRUN300.DLL, which is almost always available from any source 
  111. that would have ImgViewer/16.  Windows 95 includes 
  112. VBRUN300.DLL, but earlier Windows versions do not.  On BBS 
  113. systems the file will usually be called VBRUN300.ZIP or 
  114. VBRUN3.ZIP.  If you obtained the program on disk, the file 
  115. should be included.  If it is missing, contact the supplier of 
  116. the program.  Versions purchased from the author will always 
  117. include VBRUN300.  If you are installing VBRUN300 separately, 
  118. it MUST be put in the \Windows\System directory.
  119.  
  120. To install ImgViewer/16, run the included setup program.  If the 
  121. program is on a floppy disk, you can use File/Run in the Program 
  122. Manager and type a:setup or b:setup, whichever drive is involved.  
  123. You can use the same technique to run setup from a directory on your 
  124. hard drive by supplying the full path, such as c:\temp\setup.  
  125. Alternatively you can use File manager to find the files and 
  126. double-click on SETUP.EXE.  Do not use any SETUP.EXE that is not in 
  127. the same directory as the ImgViewer/16 files.
  128.  
  129. Windows 95 users can use the "Add/Remove Programs" item in the 
  130. Control Panel to find and start SETUP.  Again make sure that the 
  131. SETUP you are starting is in the directory where your ImgViewer/16 
  132. distribution files are located.
  133.  
  134. NOTE: Setup will not run if any other program is using VBRUN300.DLL 
  135. or any other library file used by the program.  An error message will 
  136. be generated, and you must end all such applications before retrying 
  137. the installation.  You may restart these programs after installation 
  138. is completed - they will share the VBRUN module without problem.
  139.  
  140. IV.  Getting Started.
  141.  
  142. Double-click the ImgViewer/16 icon to start the program.  If this is 
  143. not a registered copy you will see a shareware "nag" screen.  This 
  144. screen will only be repeated every 10 days, so as to not unduly 
  145. interfere with your operation of the program.  Click OK, or you may 
  146. choose to print an order form. 
  147.  
  148. When you see the main program window, Click the "folder" icon at the 
  149. left end of the icon bar, and then browse for image files to view.  
  150.  
  151. If you would like to alter the image, most of the items in the Image 
  152. menu are simple.  Browsing the help file will provide you with more 
  153. information on the image-altering functions.   V.  FILES THAT MAKE UP 
  154. ImgViewer/16.
  155.  
  156. The program files are compressed prior to setup.  They are listed here 
  157. with their compressed and uncompressed names. The setup program only 
  158. copies a file to your disk if it does not find the file already or if 
  159. this file is newer.
  160.  
  161. References to the ImgViewer/16 directory refer to the directory selected at 
  162. installation; default is C:\IMGV16

  185. VBRUN300.DL_   VBRUN300.DLL Library File, Windows\System directory 
  186. ***note:  VBRUN300.DLL may not be included if the program was obtained 
  187. from an online source.  It will have to be obtained to run the program 
  188. and the setup program.  From on-line sources, it is usually 
  189. VBRUN300.ZIP or VBRUN3.ZIP.  If the program was obtained on disk then 
  190. the file should be included; if not, contact the source of the disk.  
  191. If the file is obtained separately, it must be installed in your 
  192. Windows\System directory BEFORE you run setup.
  193.  
  194. VI.  Troubleshooting.
  195.  
  196. If you have an image that ImgViewer/16 will not display, it may be in 
  197. a format that cannot be used.  There are some variations of .GIF and 
  198. .PCX that are known to make problems for ImgViewer/16.  There are 
  199. many non-standard versions of JPEG that will cause problems.  
  200. Virtually no tool supports all JPEG types, and ImgViewer/16 will 
  201. sometimes be able to read files that other viewers can't, and 
  202. vice-versa.
  203.  
  204. If you are finding that you haven't sufficient memory to display 
  205. large files, make sure the Undo Enabled item in the Edit menu is 
  206. unchecked.  When Undo is enabled it requires an additional copy of 
  207. the image to be retained in memory.
  208.  
  209. VII. Uninstalling ImgViewer/16
  210.  
  211. The following information is provided if you would like to remove 
  212. ImgViewer/16 from your computer.
  213.  
  214. Most of the files used by ImgViewer/16 are located in your ImgViewer/16 
  215. directory.  This will be C:\IMGV16 unless you chose another directory 
  216. during installation.  Delete this directory using File Manager.
  217.  
  218. In your Windows\System directory, delete IVLIBR.VBX.  Four other 
  219. files are installed to this directory:  IKCOL16.DLL, IKENG16.DLL, 
  220. IKJPG16.DLL and IKDSP16.VBX.  These are files that may possibly be 
  221. used by other programs.  If you delete them, make backup copies first 
  222. so that they can be reinstalled if another program complains about 
  223. their absence.
  224.  
  225. Delete your ImgViewer/16 program group. Make sure that you have 
  226. selected "Save Settings on Exit" in the Options menu, and close 
  227. Windows.  ImgViewer/16 is now removed.
  228.  
  229. VIII. Obtaining images.
  230.  
  231. If you regularly use Computer BBS systems or online sources such as 
  232. Compuserve, America Online, or the Internet, you will find a wealth 
  233. of images that can be downloaded.  These images are usually in the 
  234. .GIF or .JPG formats to reduce download time.
  235.  
  236. The author is maintaining a small collection of his scans of his own 
  237. photos and those of users where permission has been granted.  It is 
  238. available by FTP from redshift.com/arcatpet/wwplus/images Files are in 
  239. .JPG format.  Thumbnails are available at the website 
  240. http://www.redshift.com/~arcatpet
  241.  
  242. IX.  Getting future Upgrades.
  243.  
  244. When you order ImgViewer/16 from the author, you will receive a copy 
  245. of the latest version and an ownership key that permanently enables 
  246. the program.  That key file will work with future versions of the 
  247. program, so no upgrade fee will be required.
  248.  
  249. Recent versions of ImgViewer/16 can always be found on Compuserve in 
  250. several forums, including WINAV, GRAPHSUP, and PHOTOFORUM.  Current 
  251. versions are also posted to America OnLine.  Use the keyword 
  252. "Windows" and search the software library for "ImgViewer/16."
  253.  
  254. The author maintains a current copy available for internet FTP.

  265. mirror sites worldwide as well.

  267. Registered users who do not have online access may get a disk copy 
  268. from the author for a fee of $5 ($7 non-US).  Send a short note 
  269. indicating your registered status and requesting the latest copy.  
  270. Please use the same name under which you ordered originally.

  272. X.  Purchase and Distribution.
  273.  
  274. ImgViewer/16 is shareware.  Free use is extended to any user 
  275. for an evaluation period of 60 days.  For use to be continued, 
  276. the program must be ordered from the author.  Price is $20.00.  
  277. California residents please add $1.45 sales tax, and non-US 
  278. buyers should include $1.00 for airmail shipping.  All 
  279. funds should be drawn on a US Dollar account. A convenient form 
  280. for ordering is included in the Help file (and may be 
  281. printed from there).  If you do not order, the program will 
  282. disable after 60 days from installation.

  284. As a purchase incentive, the author will provide on request two 
  285. free scanned images from your original prints or slides, when sent 
  286. with the order.

  288. Commercial use:  ImgViewer/16 may be used commercially, as long as there is 
  289. a registered copy for each computer/terminal that is using it.  
  290. Bulk licensing is available.
  291.  
  292. You may freely distribute ImgViewer/16 as long as no fees are charged 
  293. for the program, and all necessary files are included.  Commercial 
  294. Shareware vendors should read the included VENDOR.DOC file for 
  295. details. If you are a registered user, do not distribute the file 
  296. IV16_REG.KEY, which identifies you as the user (This identification 
  297. shows up in the "About" box).
